The Best of Their Generation: BORN IN THE 90's

Last month, I named the TOP 5 actors and actresses born in the 2000's - only 5, because most young actors younger than 22 had little opportunities to show-up.  Today, I'm naming the TOP 10 actors and actresses born in the 90's! I must admit I had a lot of fun selecting these "crop" of young talent - so young, yet so talented (and a big couple of them have achieved a lot already). For my consideration: the awards recognition, distinguished performances and successful movies, and box-office numbers. I still include distinguished TV works and performnaces on Broadway.  From Timothée Chalamet to Zendaya, have a look (listed alphabetically):

Academy Awards 2022 nominations - list

The Academy Awards 2022 nominees were announced this morning! And there are a lot of surprises... from atrocious snubs (Villeneuve misses Best Director, Negga for Passing , Faist for West Side Story and no tick, tick... BOOM! for Best Picture), to inspired choices (Cruz in Best Actress, The Worst Person in the World lands a Best Original Screenplay nod or Drive My Car in Best Picture, Director and Best Adapted Screenplay), to some relief-snubs (Jared Leto misses Best Supporting Actor, no Sing 2 in Best Animated Feature or no House of Gucci , Being the Ricardos or Spider-Man: No Way Home in Best Picture). The Power of the Dogs reigns supreme with 12 nominations, only followed by Dune with 10, which boosts Campion's movie's frontrunner title!  Have a look at this year's nominees (source: The Hollywood Reporter) BEST PICTURE Belfast (Laura Berwick, Kenneth Branagh, Becca Kovacik and Tamar Thomas, Producers) CODA (Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi and Patrick Wachsb...

Academy Awards 2022 nominees predictions: FINAL PREDICTIONS IN ALL CATEGORIES (no shorts)

BEST PICTURE The Power of the Dog and Belfast feel pretty much secure. West Side Story and Dune are the big below-the-line players with Best Picture buzz, so it feels like they also have a spot in the TOP 5. Then, I would say we have three crowd-pleasing/passion films: Licorice Pizza , CODA and King Richard , which managed to get some key precursor noms along the way (and even overperforming sometimes). So, there are 3 spots left to fill... Don't Look Up has done quite good with the guilds and audiences and Netflix is pushing it hard as an Oscar contender. The critics' darling Drive My Car is also a strong bet here, since it managed to grow in the awards season and it is a big contender in Best International Film, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay fields too. The last spot... well, the guilds would say Being the Ricardos or No Time to Die , but Netflix's tick, tick... BOOM! will pick some passion votes for sure - and it is a movie about being an artist which m...

Quick awards roundup: the guilds awards nominees (PART 3)

Some people might say the guild awards don't always translate to excelence and that they are an awards vehicle for Americanized productions...! Well, that's kinda true, but they are useful precursor in what comes to Oscar predictions, specially Best Picture (and each's guild respective categories). The AMPAS is divided in multiple branches - each branch votes a certain (or more than one) specific category, but all branches' members vote for Best Picture! This means, overall guild awards support often translates to Best Picture love! Of course there are always a couple of critics' pushes that pops-up in the Oscars shortlist, but most spots in each category were previously "predicted" by the guilds. So, let's have a look at all the guilds nominations (I am not going to include SAG Awards here, since SAG was "explored" in the previous post): PRODUCERS GUILD OF AMERICA (PGA) AWARDS Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Mot...

The Best of Their Generation: BORN IN THE 2000's

There's a certain kind of "unfairness" when we try to name the TOP 35 under 35... not only because you acted more by the age of 34 when compared with actors in their 20's, but it is also expected an actor keeps improving as long as he/she keeps working. So, besides the annual TOP 35 UNDER 35 (doing it soon) and TOP 100 ACTORS & ACTRESSES WORKING TODAY (in the works), I am starting with " The Best of Their Generation ", starting with the 2000's "kids" . Each post, I will pick 10 actors born in each decade, with the exception of the 2000's - they had little time to prove themselves, so I only selected 5 since it might be "tricky" to pick the right ones this soon in their careers! For my consideration: the awards recognition, distinguished performances and successful movies, and box-office numbers. Have a look (listed alphabetically): There are so many actors and actresses whose careers as child-actors don't translate to thei...

Quick awards roundup: Golden Globe winners and SAG Awards nominees (PART 2)

Last week was a busy week awards-wise. The Golden Globes took place and the SAG announced their nominees. With the boycott around the Golden Globes, SAG Award rise as the major Oscar precursor. In addition, a big couple of critics groups have announced their winners, but that's a matter for another post (since they are so many). But let's have a look. GOLDEN GLOBES The 79th Golden Globe Awards winners were announced on Sunday night via social media and not  in a nationally televised gala, like the years before - a "must" stop moment for movie stars and celebrities who get together to celebrate their movies and... well, get dr*nk! It marks the Hollywood FOREIGN Press Association 's fall from grace experienced over the past year since a piece of Los Angeles Times revealed that the organization included zero Black members and was involved in some suspect financial practices. Still, some studios celebrated the wins via social media (like 20th Century Studios, which b...
