December 9th, 2019 was a great day for Netflix - it got 4 movies nominated in the top categories! Plus, Marriage Story leads the Golden Globes nominations this year - it got 6 nominations, including Best Motion Picture - Drama, but it missed Best Director! On the other hand, The Irishman got 5 nods, but it got all the ones required for a "traditional" win, wich means Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director (Scorsese) and Best Screenplay (and 2 noms in the Best Supporting Actor category). Tied with Netflix's The Irishman , Once Upon a Time in Hollywood also got 5 different mentions from the HFPA, but this one competes for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. So, I guess we've already met the frontrunners of the Golden Globes race... or can Jojo Rabbit upset Tarantino's latest and win in the Comedy or Musical top field? Critics' Choice Awards 2020 nominations are out and it seems... well, it seems like an awards forum Oscar predictions: no daring picks; once again more than 5 nominees in each category, with a big couple of category with 7 nominees!; and... Cynthia Erivo?! Really? Well, kudos for the Critics Choice Awards for nominating Uncut Gems in some above the line categories, including Best Picture - and I'm not being ironic, since it seems like the least conventional of their picks. As expected, The Irishman ,  Once Upon a Time In Hollywood  and Little Women lead the critics' choice nominations, with Ford v. Ferrari , 1917 and Jojo Rabbit also making a strong show in terms of number of nominations. Marriage Story scored 7 nominations, most of them in above the line categories. A lot has happened since the October 30 - the time I posted my first Golden Globes nominees predictions. Since then, we've had access to people's reactions at some industry screenings, first critics prizes and box-office results. As we all know, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) tends to go for bigger stars or star-making turns, when actors go against type, relevant/media-friendly movies and box-office hits. A month ago, I truly thought The Two Popes would do fine with awards, but it seems critics awards are more into The Irishman and Marriage Story , speaking of Netflix productions. Knives Out and Ford v. Ferrari overperformed at the box-office, Joker reached $1 Billion worldwide and Margot Robbie seems to be overshadowed by what seems to be Charlize Theron's brilliant performance in Bombshell (so, I guess her best chance for the Globes is Once Upon a Time... One of the most reliable early critics prizes, the New York Film Critics Online has just announced their TOP 10 Films of the Year and their winners for each category. Parasite is the big winner of the night by taking home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. I'm very happy to see Lupita Nyong'o among the winners too - she has just won Best Actress for Us ! The American Film Institute (AFI) has just named their picks for the Best Motion Pictures of the Year - 2019. It's a major achievement for Netflix ( The Irishman and Marriage Story ), Sony ( Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and Little Women ) and Warner Bros. ( Joker and Richard Jewell ) with each one scoring 2 mentions in the list. Pay special attention to Bong Joon-ho 's Parasite , which managed to get a Special Award out of the top 10 honoured movies.
