Tiny Reviews: "Mother Mary", "Michael", "Scary Movie 6" and "Undertone"

MOTHER MARY
Anne Hathaway and, specially, Michaela Coel shine in a movie that feels really about... nothing! Stellar cinematography and inspired set pieces with some pretty smart and fluid transitions make Mother Mary impressive to look at at times, but feels like a sterile piece of filmmaking full of empty dialogue and music sequences I wish they were longer. Yes, it's the best Anne Hathaway performance since Rachel Getting Married and seeing her taking on a darker character sure is enough reason to watch it, but this film transported me to a cinematic void that didn't ignite a single emotion from me. It's a cinematic painting and maybe it's my problem that I didn't find the meaning behind it.

MICHAEL
It's not as bad as some reactions made me believe, but it's not good either. It's a convential fan-friendly cash grabber biopic that never really explores the real Michael Jackson but makes it a Wikipedia-check cinematic journey. Jaafar Jackson shines with a commited performance that's more about being show-stopping than internally powerful (but again, so it's the movie itself), but it works in the way he makes for a captivating lead. Bad CGI and uninspired dialogue. Colman Domingo, makeup work and sound departament try to push the movie to positive ground but... Underwhelming and never impressive, but entertaining enough - still, such a complex iconic demanded more and better. You can't help but feel it was a movie meant to cash on Michael Jackson's legacy and eternal fame.

SCARY MOVIE 6
I think it follows the Scream plot a bit too much and they recalled a lot of funny but smart horror references that felt underused.. Still, I had some laughs since there are not many films that embrace its own ridiculousness. Seeing Anna Faris & Regina Hall pairing together once again felt like a dream, but Scary Movie 6 should spend more time with them (which affects the movie deeply). The opening scene was a dream parody and I really felt this one could be a true saving grace for the franchise, but everything seems to derail after that... still...! Loved the attempt of satirical comments on woke culture and legacy characters in cash-cow franchises - I just wish it was made better, since they didn't really land! In the end, it feels like a waste of potential and 2000s nostalgia momentum.
R: 4,5/10

UNDERTONE
It's creepy because of the way it handles a horrific subjects, recalling the same kind of urban myths and stories of my 2000s chilhood making it extremely effective as a horror movie. Its third act is actually quite scary and the ending feels inevitable. Nina Kiri is fantastic here and I really felt like suffering right by her side. Andrew Garfield's voice work is also spellbinding here and it felt essential to create this movie's very specific atmosphere. Might be the feel bad movie of the year and I was surprised by how profound it actually was.

TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today - 2017

The almost annual TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today is out, with me considering the performers' performances of 2016 also. We have a few changes since last year's list, with Greta Gerwig toping the list thanks to her last 3 great performances in Mistress America , Maggie's Plan and the Oscar buzzy acting turn in 20th Century Women . Scarlett Johansson comes second with her latest distinguished performance being in 2014 ( Under the Skin ), but she managed to be at the spotligh this year thanks to her fine turns in critically acclaimed movies: Hail, Caesar! , Captain America: Civil War , The Jungle Book (voice) and Sing (voice). Emily Blunt adds another great performance to her resume in The Girl on the Train and she comes third, while Elle Fanning 's turning into one of the finest actresses and she's getting to play more adult and complex parts like The Neon Demon  and 20th Century Women 's (her two best performances since Super 8 ). TOP 10 Most Promising Movie Actors (under 30)

Today I discussed about how awful some "teen icons" are and then we talked about some exceptions. So, I decided to make a little list, a TOP 10, with the male actors that I think that will become music in an ocean of noise somewhere in the future (I did one list before, but it was a little bit pathetic and I didn't justify my choices). Let's start... 1 - Ryan Gosling He may not have a huge list of movies in his body of work, but the few times he makes something, all the time he almost carries the movie. In fact, Gosling is a proof that talent does exist and that you don't need excentrical characters to receive raves. He rose to fame after the big screen adaptation of The Notebook (2004) and then received lots of critical praise for his performances in movies like Half Nelson (that gave him an Oscar, a SAG Award and other major awards nominations), Lars and the Real Girl (that gave him a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and other major awards nominations) and Fractur...

ACTOR/ACTRESS OF THE MONTH: Michelle, ma belle

Michelle Pfeiffer Born: April 29, 1958 in Santa Ana, California, USA Oscar recognition:  1989 - Best Supporting Actress for Dangerous Liaisons (nom)  1990 - Best Leading Actress for The Fabulous Baker Boys (nom)  1993 - Best Leading Actress for Love Field (nom) One of the most beautiful women that ever walked on Earth, Michelle Pfeiffer was the A-list of the A-list in the late 80's and in the begining of the 90's, managing to get 6 Golden Globe nominations (winning one) 6 years in a round, for 6 amazing performances. She called attentions with her charm and voice in the movie musical flop Grease 2 , but she started gaining a "serious actress reputation" after appearing in Brian de Palma's Scarface . After Scarface , she became the biggest Hollywood movie star and delivered iconic performances as Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys and as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Tim Burton's Batman Returns .  After some years away from stardo...
