REVIEW: "Killers of the Flower Moon"

Genre: Drama Director: Martin Scorsese Writer: Eric Roth & Martin Scorsese Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, Tantoo Cardinal and Cara Jade Myers Some might argue that Killers of the Flower Moon is too long and that might hurt the audiences' ability to appreciate its quality - they are not wrong, but I found Scorsese's latest a truly fascinating tale of greed and grief. The director works around the most interesting central subject he has ever handled since The Departed and I got completely engaged in the movie's narrative. Plus, Killers of the Flower Moon is exquisitely crafted and amazingly acted, making it an extremely satisfying cinematic experience at the movies. The movie starts by presenting the greatness of the Osage people and how they got insanely rich by accident and it shows how good their lives were back in the day. Then the white men arrive and things start getting as dirty as the oil the Osage...

The Actors of the Decade - 70's

To be honest, I had a lot of fun looking back to past decades and selecting the biggest movie stars... So... I did it again, this time for the 70's! Of course I wasn't even born at the time, but I recall some stories of my parents telling me how much they loved some movies that were released in their teens. And, of course, because of social isolation due to COVID-19 outbreak, I've been able to watch a lot of movies these days!  It's not always about delivering the best performance in order to be considered one of the greatest actresses of a decade - it also takes the ability to open a big production movie, to turn a small indie into a box-office hit or work with some of the most prestigious directors/auteurs these days. That's how I made this list: performances + prestige movies + box-office numbers!  And we've got our 70's decade's biggest male movie stars:

The Actors of the Decade - 90's

To be honest, I had a lot of fun looking back to past decades and selecting the biggest movie stars... So... I did it again, this time for the 90's! Of course I don't have the same level of insight because of my cinematic maturity at the time (I was a newborn back then), but considering what I watched and the passion my dad talks about movies of that time, I think I was able to make a fair selection! It's not always about delivering the best performance in order to be considered one of the greatest actors of a decade - it also takes the ability to open a big production movie, to turn a small indie into a box-office hit or work with some of the most prestigious directors/auteurs these days. REVIEW: "The Irishman"

Genre: Drama Directed by: Martin Scorsese Written by: Steve Zaillian Starring: Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Stephen Graham and Anna Paquin In theaters: November 1, 2019 (USA limited) The long-awaited Martin Scorsese's passion project, The Irishman has finally seen the light of the day this year and let me say it is a "hell of an epic". We've already known Scorsese as an American master in the craft of filmmaking, specially in the mob drama genre ( Mean Streets , Goodfellas , Casino , Gangs of New York and The Departed ), but he excels in The Irishman! But let me be clear: The Irishman is not a movie for everyone. It's slow, the first act slowly builds the next two and there's nothing really going one besides characters development and their backgrounds... but then Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) enters the scene and everything changes!   The Irishman  starts with Frank Sheeran's (Robert DeNiro) initiation i...

National Board of Review winners - THE IRISHMAN is named Best Film of 2019

The National Board of Review has just announced their picks for 2019... and Martin Scorsese's The Irishman was named the Best Film of 2019! It's a major win for the mob epic, a movie that was absent from the early awards list since it doesn't qualify as an independent production (Gotham Awards and Independent Spirit Awards are just for indies) - but it has just started the awards season with a big stan!  Are Renee Zellweger ( Judy ) and Brad Pitt ( Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood ) going to sweep all the awards? Both are considered to be the clear frontrunners in their respective categories, but NBR Awards aren't a trustful predictor of the Oscar wins (or even the nods in some years). Let's have a look at the Best Actress category: from the 9 NBR winners since 2010 (Zelweger is excluded of course), 4 missed a Best Actress nom, 3 got nominations and 2 won the Oscar. If go back to the 2000's, every NBR Best Actress winner landed an Oscar nomination, with...
