Academy Awards 2019 nominees predictions: BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (Early Predictions)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS The category of the "supportive wives" and "suffering/brave mothers", Best Supporting Actress race this year doesn't go "outside the box", offering contenders that fit the "supportive wife" or "suffering mom" role. Let's begin with Amy Adams in Backseat , who portrays Lynne Cheney (wife of the 46th Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney), a former talk-show host and author, in Adam McKay 's upcoming movie - and while she missed a Best Actress nomination for her great performance in 2016's Arrival , she was Oscar-nominated 5 times already. Cate Blanchett is also back to Oscar talk this year and while I don't really know if she's going to be campaigned "leading" or "supporting"... truth is her character looks like a supporting one on paper (she plays a mothers who suffers from a nervous breakdown and disappears and the main plot is about her daughter lookin

Singers Turned Actors: 10 cases of success

A Star Is Born 's trailer was released this week and left most people wondering:  " Can Lady Gaga be in award contention? " Well, Hollywood story show a big couple of cases of singers-turned-actors who did great on-screen by delivering some memorable performances in some iconic movies. Today, I present you my 10 favorite acting turns from a singer on the big screen. So, shall we begin? 1. Frank Sinatra in From Here to Eternity (1953) Sinatra got the chance of not-being a crooner and he took it! From Here to Eternity deals with the tribulations of three U.S. Army soldiers (with Sinatra's Maggio being one of them), stationed on Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. And he delivers a complex performance, full of nuanced moments, full of soul and inner drama. As the likeable yet-violent Maggio, Frank Sinatra proves to be a real actor and got the recognition from the AMPAS by winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Academy Awards 2019 nominees predictions - BEST ACTOR (Early Predictions)

BEST ACTOR What an amazing year it promises to be for the Best Actor race: we have Dic Cheney (aka Christian Bale ), Neil Armstrong (aka Ryan Gosling ), Freddie Mercury (aka Rami Malek ), Forrest Tucker (aka Robert Redford ) and a fictional character Detective Ron Stallworth played by John David Washington leading the competition right now. And while I believe there is too many "real-life" personalities being portrayed on-screen this year (with Malek's work being the potential weakest contender here due to production problems/controversies in spite of having nothing to do with him, because I think he looks and acts like [a lost brother of] Freddie!), truth is the AMPAS loves biopics. Bale is a safe bet not only because he's an estabilished name in Hollywood but also because of the talent involved in Backseat (he's working with The Big Short director!!!!) and the same could be said about Gosling (he stars the next Damien Chazelle 's movie, who's fresh

Academy Awards 2019 nominees predictions - BEST ACTRESS (Early Predictions)

BEST ACTRESS It seems to be a very rich year in what comes to acting. Just like the fantastic lineup of Best Actor contenders (I'm writing the next post), Best Actress promises to be as good or even better. From a celebrated veteran actress who's overdue for an Oscar win ( Glenn Close  who plays a woman trying to free herself from her toxic husband in a film festival-praised performance in The Wife ) to a newcomer ( Kiki Layne,  who promises to deliver a breakthrough performance as pregnante young girl in Barry Jenkins ' If Beale Street Could Talk , filling the young ingenue + black actress + breakthrough performance spot), "diversity" might be this year's word. And let's not forget the Sundance actress of the year, Carey Mulligan , in her biggest acting showcase ever according to critics (or, at least, since 2009's An Education ) as a wife in crisis in Paul Dano 's Wildlife , while Julianne Moore , one of the most gifted actresses these days, p

The 5 Best Movies of the Year So Far: Reviews and Oscar prospects

1. ISLE OF DOGS Director: Wes Anderson I'm not a big animated feature films fan, but Isle of Dogs dry humour and detail just amazed me. Full of beautiful details which reflects what a brilliant director Anderson is, the movie also works as a piece of social commentary and an essay about humans losing their humanity. Remarkable voice performances and a simple yet really fine work from Alexander Desplat in the original score department, Dogs can be considered (one of) the year's most unique cinematic pieces. And the dialogue? Oh! I loved the dialogue! Another small masterpiece from Wes Anderson. OSCAR POTENTIAL Best Animated Feature Best Director (Wes Anderson) Best Original Screenplay 2. A QUIET PLACE Director: John Krasinsky Silence has never been so loud as it is in A Quiet Place . Suspense, an original plot, elevating the monster movie to a whole new level, the movie succeeds because of its uniqueness. You are not used to truly brilliant movie
