Academy Awards 2023 nominees predictions: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay (1st ROUND)

I know these categories come a bit late, but to be honest nothing has changed that much since I first drawed these charts. In fact, the awards race seems like the pundits consensus in these fields, with some titles eyeing a surprise ascension at this point of the race. Funny how so many Cannes-titles have managed to enter the awards race: Anatomy of a Fall ( Anatomie d'une chute ), The Zone of Interest , The Taste of Things ( La passion de Dodin Bouffant ), Asteroid City , May December , Perfect Days or, from a certain perspective, Killers of the Flower Moon . Also, the Summer titles Oppenheimer and Barbie also managed to live-up their critical and box-office successes and their studios are campaigning them successfully. I don't remember a season with so many early titles under the consideration for the top categories, recently. It amazes me and it defies the concept of "Oscar-baity release date" - it shows that if a film is good, then it will stand the test of Su...

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Marriage Story ’s essence is all about the script, it’s all about Baumbach’s words and silences – the actors even admitted it was all on paper – and it’s brilliant! The movie offers a raw approach to divorce and the end of a love story, which recalls its auteur own life – Baumbach is a safe bet for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination. And Quentin Tarantino enters the Best Original Screenplay race again, this time with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ! Tarantino’s latest channels Hollywood and the late 60’s beautifully, plus the dialogue is top-notch and the third act is as hilarious as it is surprising: and the AMPAS loves Tarantino as the screenwriter, so, no big deal! A daring movie, with a dynamite social satire, Parasite is a big Oscar contender across the board and Best Original Screenplay is no exception. The late awards season surprise Knives Out became a much bigger Oscar contender than most people were expecting! Best Picture is on the tab...

Toronto International Film Festival champion: "GREEN BOOK" gets a Best Picture race passport

Funny that a movie no one was really talking about took home the top prize of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2018 - Peter Farrely's Green Book . While the movie draws some initial comparisons to Driving Miss Daisy , it seems it goes a bit deeper. The story of a friendship between a white chauffeur and a black jazz music star, according to reviews the movie pays respect to both leads' social backgrounds without sacrifing its feel-good vibe. Yeah! A feel-good movie won TIFF (maybe the very first since Slumdog Millionaire ). And guess what? I added Green Book in my Oscar nominees predictions charts at the GoldDerby last Friday! Lucky me! And now, Green Book enters the race for the Academy Award for Best Picture: since 2008,only 1 of the TIFF winners (2011's Where Do We Go Now? ) was not Best Picture nominated, with Slumdog Millionaire (2008), The King's Speech (2010) and 12 Years a Slave (2012) taking home the Oscar for Best Picture at the end of t...
