Academy Awards 2023 nominees predictions: Best Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup & Hair and Visual Effects
In the previous posts, it was all about the sound categories. Today it's all about the "visual" categories: editing, cinematography, production design, costume design, makeup & hair and visual effects.
Epic productions fare well in these races (usually), but there's no way to deny a spot to smaller or even international productions with widespread critical acclaim. Big players in these fields usually translate to Best Picture love (like Dune, most recently, for example), but this year feels a bit overcrowded with big quality productions - Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Babylon, Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, The Fabelmans and The Batman. Still, I feel Netflix's All Quiet On the Western Front might have a nice show here: war movies tend to do good in these categories and since Netflix lost its biggest Oscar horses due to less enthusiastic buzz-killing (non-enthusiastic) critical receptions for Bardo, White Noise and Blonde, I believe the streaming giant might bet some good coin on the critically raved war movie they have in hands. They have done it before with Roma and the final outcome was pretty positive!
Can IFC's Corsage (which will widely seen for sure thanks being selected as Austria's official entry and because of Vicky Krieps buzzy performance as Empress Sissi) pop-up in Best Costume Design? Can Decision to Leave get a Best Editing nomination? Kim Sang-beom's work in the editing sure is impressive! And what about RRR? Some claim it has a nice shot in the Best Visual Effects category, but will general audiences (and Hollywood) embrace Bollywood?
Could the less showy (but one of the Best Picture favorites) Women Talking grab a Best Editing nomination since the top category frontrunners usually fare well in this particular category? Or is the chaotic Elvis destined to surprise in editing? And about Empire of Light? Last reviews are mixed to kinda negative... but Roger Deakins might well be the best DP alive... a sole nod for Best Cinematography? Or is the movie too weak for Searchlight's ambitions so they will put all their money on The Banshees of Inisherin? And... The Northman? One of the biggest early releases of the year has almost no buzz right now, but that cinematography, production design and makeup (and sound) works are pretty impressive - will Focus Features push it?
I need the first critics association prizes so I can clear my mind better. The only certainty I have is Avatar: The Way of Water is the clear frontrunner for Best Visual Effects, but I still fear a Top Gun: Maverick upset in that category!
Here are my predictions. Have a look:
