Wes Anderson, the writer-director of The Royal Tenenbaums (Best Original Screenplay nominated movie) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (Best Animated Feature nominated movie), will open Cannes Film Festival with his latest project: Moonrise Kingdom. The film festival will run from 16th to 27th May of 2012.
"Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, MOONRISE KINGDOM tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore — and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle."
The movie stars Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman and Bob Balaban and it will have a limited USA release is set for 25th May, maybe hoping that good reviews from Cannes will translate into a commercial success. In fact, Wes Anderson movies are no commercial bombs, since The Royal Tenenbaums is his most profitable movie with a bit less than 53 million dollars scored in USA box-office.
Moonrise Kingdom looks good and sounds wonderful and it promises to be one of the most interesting movies of 2012. While being one of the best is no guarantee of awards recognition, Mr. Anderson can't complain from the awards associations. The movie will certainly enchant a big couple of people since the trailer gives us a "feel-good" vibe and the freshness and magic of young love.
