Of course it is too soon to predict the Academy Award nominees since the "Oscar releases" will only come around September/October/November/Christmas, but sometimes early word on some cinematic works and some early releases give me enough factors to have under consideration.
This way and after presenting you my TOP 5 contenders, it's time to present the other contenders I have under serious consideration:
- #6: Daniel Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread - Last time Paul Thomas Anderson casted Daniel Day-Lewis in one of his films, the final result was There Will Be Blood...! I know it might seem unwise not including one of the best actors alive in TOP 5, specially when he interrumpted his acting "break", but there's something missing in Phantom Thread (maybe it's the lack of details!).
- #7: Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out - The star of the horror hit of the year! Kaluuya is a commanding presence on-screen and a very expressive performer. If all the enthusiasm around the movie turns into Oscar buzz and Get Out gains some traction during awards season, I can see this actor's breakthrough performance getting some credit from the Oscar voters since he isn't "too young" for a nod (28 years old).
- #8: Timothée Chalamet for Call Me by Your Name - A beautiful performance, an acclaimed performance and a breakthrough performance: all in the person of Mr. Chamalet who plays the lead role in this gay love story. The universal acclaim around the movie and his performance will work as a magnet for critics associations' prizes and maybe the AMPAS will buy this acting turn from one of the revelations of the year. The buzz is crazy, but he's very young!
- #9: Andrew Garfield for Breathe - Just like I said before, Oscar voters love disabilities and the movie looks solid enough as an acting vehicle for its cast members. Andrew Garfield is fresh from last year's Oscar nomination for Hacksaw Ridge. He will deliver a fine performance for sure, but for some reason I think the Academy members will prefer Jake Gyllenhaal (Stronger) who got his last nomination in 2005, giving him the "successful disability performance" seat in the nominees shortlist. Plus, it kinda seems Claire Foy might outshine Garfield in this one!!!
- #10: Matt Damon for Downsizing - Alexander Payne is the man behind the creation of great characters on paper so they translate into memorable characters on-screen and Downsizing will be no exception for sure. Damon is a competent actor and sometimes he can be brilliant with the right material (that Payne will provide, for sure). Will Damon follow Jack Nicholson, George Clooney and Bruce Dern in the galery of Alexander Payne's Oscar nominated leading man? It can happen!
