Well, last time I presented you my Academy Awards 2018 nominees predictions for Best Actress it was August... and a lot has changed during September and October! For example: Judi Dench delivers a great performance in Victoria & Abdul, but the movie didn't do well between critics; Annette Bening got rave reviews for her turn as Gloria Grahame in the well-received Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, but for some reason the Oscar buzz has faded with no reason; and Glenn Close's The Wife got a 2018 release and she won't compete this year! And a lot of actresses scored high...
Now, it's time to update my predictions. Here they are:
So, we have Jessica Chastain (Molly's Game), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Meryl Streep (The Post) and Vicky Krieps (The Phantom Thread)... but in spite of feeling confident about my bets, there are other contender I have to mention. They delivered well-reviewed performances and they still have strong Oscar chances, since everything can change during precursor awards season.
- #6: Kate Winslet for Wonder Wheel - Woody Allen directed many actresses to Oscar nominations and Winslet is a very talented actress, so things seem really easy, right? Well, the movie trailer got me a bit less confident about the movie. Winslet looks amazing (as always), but I fear the movie might not be that well-received in order to build strong Oscar traction for its female star.
- #7: Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird - The star of Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, the comedy-drama that did great during Fall film festivals season. Ronan's performance got huge raves and the Oscar buzz is alive! Indie community will support her for sure, but in such a competitive year for Best Actress race Oscar will be a tougher challenge. A third nod for such a young actress?
- #8: Florence Pugh for Lady Macbeth - Amazing. Astonishing. Magnetic. The young Florence Pugh delivers an unforgettable performance in Lady Macbeth. But it is a small production and in spite of film festival warm reception and critics' mad love for Pugh's turn, truth is AMPAS doesn't go for period pieces in a long time...
- #9: Emma Stone for Battle of the Sexes - She's still warm from last year's win for La La Land and she's back to Oscar talk. She plays Billie Jean King in this comedy-drama and critics loved her. She sure is a charming presence on-screen but her major trophy is her fresh hit-girl superstar status.
- #10: Margot Robbie for I, Tonya - Some love her, some hate her. There is no consensus about Margot Robbie, but she got kind reviews for her performance in I, Tonya. Considered the best performance of her yet short career, Robbie might have a nice shot. She's a young beauty and she's reaching stardom... Will she get the "never nominated before spot"? She's a contender for sure. I feel she can surprise. (Personally, I'm not a big fan to be honest).
