Well, last time I presented you my Academy Awards 2018 nominees predictions for Best Supporting Actress things seemed pretty sure, but as you know, things change a lot after Fall film festivals and Fall movie releases...! So, let's start with Claire Foy for Breathe (my #6 in my last predictions) who lost all the Oscar buzz around her simply because the movie was a deception for the AMPAS standards... and the same can be said about Juno Temple in Wonder Wheel - the movie's heart and soul is Kate Winslet alone (and the cinematography work). And then there are some fresh contenders who became instant Oscar frontrunners!
Now, it's time to update my predictions. Here they are:
Well, it seems it's all about "playing a mother", this year. If you exclude Brooklyn Prince (The Florida Project), you have Allison Janney (I, Tonya), Holly Hunter (The Big Sick), Mary J. Blidge (Mudbound) and Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) all playing monster/stressed/brave/going crazy moms... What about the supporting wives, the comedic or dramatic scene stealers and the young ingenues? Well, let's have a look other 5 contenders to keep under consideration for this Best Supporting Actress Oscar race:
- #6: Michelle Pfeiffer for mother! - She's a cinematic magnet and she truly shines (and steals the show from Jennifer Lawrence) in Darren Aronofsky's latest movie, the horror flick mother! The critical response was divisive, with polarizing reviews, but critics and audiences seem unanimous when it comes to Pfeiffer: she shines! It's a kind of a career comeback and she was a big star in the 80's and 90's with some Oscar history... I wouldn't consider her out.
- #7: Kristin Scott Thomas for Darkest Hour - The role of the supportive wife. She's said to bring some class and light to a testosterone-full movie as the wife of Winston Churchill and reviews were kind to her. Best Picture players tend to win Oscar traction to supporting actors and actresses, but people are all-eyes for Gary Oldman in the title role it seems Scott Thomas might end up snubed.
- #8: Tiffany Haddish for Girls Trip - She's comedic gold in the comedy-hit of this Summer - Girls Trip. An unexpected box-office and critical acclaimed hit, the movie works as an acting vehicle for its ladies, but it is Haddish who shines the most in a breakthrough/star-making performance. Funny and charismatic, will she get the Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) treatment? It can happen!
- #9: Melissa Leo for The Novitiate - Rave reviews for her performance in the indie The Novitiate. Since this year's edition of Sundance Film Festival she has been considered a top contender for the Best Supporting Actress race, but she has lost a lot of traction during the Fall film festivals to fresher contenders in more audience-appealing movies. There's a lot of drama going on The Novitiate (AMPAS loves extreme dramatic parts) and she's the movie's best (and only) chance for a nomination...
- #10: Octavia Spencer for The Shape of Water - Guillermo Del Toro's latest generated enthusiastic waves during Fall film festivals and it took home the top prize of Venice Film Festival... and while most critics were all about Sally Hawkins' central performance, some weren't able to ignore Spencer's. She's the bridge between Hawkins' character and the real world, a listener and a speaker and she brings warmth to the movie. The AMPAS proved last year she wasn't a "one win forever" actress with Hidden Figures, so a third nod can happen...
