Well, my first thoughts? Critics shouldn't play this safe - too many categories with 6 and 7 nominees. It's like "we will nominate all the strong contenders and let controversial choices to Oscars"... It's almost like seeing a Satellite Awards nominees shortlist, but Critics' Choice Awards still have much more credibility!
Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is a clear front-runner here, scoring 14 nominations, with Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also score nice here in the main categories. Highlights to Jessica Chastain who seems to be in a quest to be taken under serious consideration for what's said to be her phenomenal performance in Molly's Game. Mudbound also scores nice here (for a Netflix movie, but it missed Best Picture anyway) and both Lady Bird and The Florida Project got well-deserved Best Picture nominations - crucial for their Oscar dreams! And we got The Big Sick here, which I love and I've always predicted this comedy to get a Best Picture nod (I want it to happen so bad)!
