Warner Bros. announced they are moving The Great Gatsby from Christmas Day 2012 to a yet unspecified Summer 2013 release. Tragic news for movie folks (like me)!
According to Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution,
"Based on what we've seen, Baz Luhrmann's incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible."
Well, it doesn't mean The Great Gatsby isn't good enough for Oscar... If we look back in time, Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! was part of Cannes Film Festival and it was a major Oscar player, being nominated in Best Picture and Best Actress categories, between others. In fact, it may be a really smart decision: during Summer season, movies don't tend to be so Oscary, so Gatsby may contrast from its competition and shine brighter and have a better box-office performance (or it can be a big commercial flop).
I can't say I'm not "sad" for having to wait to see this movie. Maybe it will have its premiére during a film festival!
