Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" Secret Premiere Screening Reactions

It seems that some people were blessed with a secret premiere screening of Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming The Master, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, and the first reactions seem pretty enthusiastic (I'm not including some tweets that were found).

“Don’t want to say more than a few words about it but it is an all around excellent film. I’ve yet to see one bad PSH performance but this one may be his best. 2hrs 10 min. Will get nods for Picture. Good chance of winning original screenplay and acting awards. If it were me, I’d put them both in the Best Actor category but if one them is getting the supporting nod, its Hoffman. It will have its fair share of detractors and its not a “safe” choice. If you guys can, see The Master in 70 mm. Looked gorgeous and its the way P.T Anderson wants you to see it.“

“I’m still digesting everything I saw, but it was pretty amazing. It was like a strange fever dream. [But] not audience friendly AT ALL. An ambiguous ending and not one likable character. And without any ‘milkshake’ lines, it probably won’t have the breakthrough that There Will Be Blood had… There are three or four scenes between Phoenix and Hoffman that are barn burners. It also containts the best work Amy Adams has ever done… Phoenix WILL win Best Actor unless Daniel Day Lewis blows us away with [his] Lincoln performance. This is Raging Bull territory for him. Believe it or not, his performance is stranger than that fake doc he made. The only way I can describe him is ‘animalistic.’ (I think the Master title refers to more of a dog and his master. At least that was the vibe I got).. The style feels like Terrence Malick by way of There Will Be Blood.”

Well, I believe the Oscar buzz around The Master will get even stronger. I must admit I don't see the movie as a major Best Picture contender, since it promises to be a great acting showcase for the actors and a well-written movie than a cinematic wonder, but I can easily be wrong and these reactions are an indicator of the movie's excellent quality - it promises to be "interesting" from the worst point of view.

Today I discussed about how awful some "teen icons" are and then we talked about some exceptions. BEST PICTURE BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE Leonardo DiCaprio is a true movie star and the enthusiastic reception of Paul Thomas Anderson is earning him a ton of rave reviews while the movie seems to be a pretty solid contender in virtually every category at the Oscars. Timothée Chalamet seems to have landed the a charismatic movie star role in MARTY SUPREME while Danial Day-Lewis is acting (and Oscar royalty) and he looks marvelous in ANEMONE trailer. Jeremy Allen White is fresh from THE BEAR TV series glory and his performance as Bruce Springsteen has already earned him raves (and the AMPAS can't resist a musician's biopic).
