2010's Cinema Revelations

2010 is a little less than 3 monts to come to an end, but the cinema industry has already seen a lot of talent and work that came from some "fresh faces" and other from a little more known people who proved this year why they still working. I made my list of the biggest revelations so far in both directing and acting. This is not a top 10, it's a list that has 10 names that could be 11 or more if I have found someone else who has impressed the audiences and the critics in a good way. I hope you agree with me! (I put the names in alphabetical order)

Derek Cianfrance

Born: ?-?-1975 (?)
Why he's a revelation: he directed the highly acclaimed Blue Valentine (official selection of Cannes Film Festival, of Sundance Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival) starring the indie movie stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. In spite of having previous works, Cianfrances seems to have the recognition he seems to deserve as a good indie director thanks to Blue Valentine.

James Frecheville

Born: ?-?-1991
Why he's a revelation:
he stars the most praised piece of the Australian cinema of the year (Animal Kingdom), receiving raves for his debut performance alongside other serious actors while playing the main focus of the movie.

Andrew Garfield

Born: 20-08-1983
Why he's a revelation: he stars the British drama Never Let Me Go (alongside Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley) and he has a supporting role in the highly acclaimed David Fincher's The Social Network, being seen as a strong Oscar contender for his performance in the last one. Plus, this year he signed to play Peter Parker/Spiderman in the next Spiderman reboot direct by Marc Webb.

Debra Granik

Born: 02-02-1963
Why she's a revelation: she directs one of the most acclaimed movies of the year, the indie drama Winter's Bone (the biggest winner in Sundance Film Festival), and, in spite of having a previous and high acclaimed directing work (Down to the Bone, starring Vera Farmiga), Granik is in the spotlight because of the Oscar caliber of her last work, being seen as an Oscar contender.

Aaron Johnson

Born: 13-06-1990
Why he's a revelation: he may be a known face specially since last year, when Nowhere Boy was released in British theatres, but the biopic of John Lennon only released in USA last week. The major reason of his stardom isn't only his praised performance as John Lennon, it's also about his leading role in the acclaimed action-crime-thriller Kick-Ass, one very-well received Summer movie with a big couple of fans.

Jennifer Lawrence

Born: 15-08-1990
Why she's a revelation: she may be already known for the audiences who saw The Burning Plain, but Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most talked actresses of this year thanks to her highly praised breakthough performance in the indie drama Winter's Bone, while getting a lot of Oscar buzz for this one.

Chloë Moretz

Born: 10-02-1997
Why she's a revelation: she showed the world she can kick some serious ass and act very well at the same time in Kick-Ass, showing her huge charisma to the audiences. Plus, she stars the remake of a Swedish horror-thriller-romance movie (Let Me In) that was very well-received by the critics who also praised her performance as a little vampire.

Noomi Rapace

Born: 28-12-1979
Why she's a revelation: she rised to her current stardom thanks to her amazing performance as Lisbeth Salander in the three Swedish movie adaptations of the worldwide litterary phenomen of the Millenium Trilogy (The Girl With Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest). Playing such a complez character gave her all the critics' love and she's getting a big Oscar buzz for the Best Actress category. Plus, she's being called the Next Big Thing!

Mia Wasikowska

Born: 14-10-1989
Why she's a revelation: she starred Tim Burton's blockbuster adaptation of Alice In Wonderland, playing the role of Alice, and she has a good supporting role in one of the most praised movies of the year, the indie comedy The Kids Are All Right. She might not be a totally fresh face for some people (she appeared in Rogue and That Evening Sun), but this year she's getting all the attentions, being named as a bankable actress but also a serious one!

Jacki Weaver

Born: 25-05-1947
Why she's a revelation: she may be a known face for the Australian people (she was a sex symbol in 70's, in Australia), but I think she will get some attentions in all over the world for her critically-loved performance in Animal Kingdom, because of all the praise of the movie itself and because of her current and significant Oscar buzz (I want see Animal Kingdom so bad!)

TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today - 2017

The almost annual TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today is out, with me considering the performers' performances of 2016 also. We have a few changes since last year's list, with Greta Gerwig toping the list thanks to her last 3 great performances in Mistress America , Maggie's Plan and the Oscar buzzy acting turn in 20th Century Women . Scarlett Johansson comes second with her latest distinguished performance being in 2014 ( Under the Skin ), but she managed to be at the spotligh this year thanks to her fine turns in critically acclaimed movies: Hail, Caesar! , Captain America: Civil War , The Jungle Book (voice) and Sing (voice). Emily Blunt adds another great performance to her resume in The Girl on the Train and she comes third, while Elle Fanning 's turning into one of the finest actresses and she's getting to play more adult and complex parts like The Neon Demon  and 20th Century Women 's (her two best performances since Super 8 ). TOP 10 Most Promising Movie Actors (under 30)

Today I discussed about how awful some "teen icons" are and then we talked about some exceptions. So, I decided to make a little list, a TOP 10, with the male actors that I think that will become music in an ocean of noise somewhere in the future (I did one list before, but it was a little bit pathetic and I didn't justify my choices). Let's start... 1 - Ryan Gosling He may not have a huge list of movies in his body of work, but the few times he makes something, all the time he almost carries the movie. In fact, Gosling is a proof that talent does exist and that you don't need excentrical characters to receive raves. He rose to fame after the big screen adaptation of The Notebook (2004) and then received lots of critical praise for his performances in movies like Half Nelson (that gave him an Oscar, a SAG Award and other major awards nominations), Lars and the Real Girl (that gave him a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and other major awards nominations) and Fractur

TOP 35 Actors and Actresses with or under 35 years old: 2018

I think it was my TOP 35 under 35 list I've ever done since I remember: so many great performers emerged last year with distinguished performances that elevated their previous works (I'm talking about Elizabeth Olsen , Lucas Hedges , Robert Pattinson , Gaspard Ulliel , Tessa Thompson or Jamie Bell , for example). I'm kinda sad I felt "forced" at letting Jonah Hill ( Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street ) and Emma Watson ( The Perks of Being a Wallflower , The Bling Ring and 2017's Beauty and the Beast ) out of the list. Congratulations to Kirsten Dunst , who turned 35 last year so she can not be included in this year's list - such an amazing child actress turned movie star, who delivered memorable performances in Interview with the Vampire (1994), The Virgin Suicides (1999), The Cat's Meow (2002) or Melancholia (2011). This year, Saoirse Ronan tops the list thanks to two great performances: On Chesil Beach and an iconic acting turn in Lad
