Baz Lhurman's The Great Gatsby

"We haven’t heard much about the upcoming adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved classic, The Great Gatsby. In fact, we haven’t heard anything about the project since we reported on the news that director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) had bought the rights to the novel in 2008. Now, Production Weekly has announced some exciting casting rumors via their twitter feed. The rumors are that Leonardo DiCaprio is up for the role of Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire for Nick Carraway, and Amanda Seyfried for Daisy Buchanan. There is no mention of Luhrmann directing, but I’m going to assume that he still owns the rights and will be helming the film.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel continues to be mandatory school reading (I read it in 8th grade) for a good reason. The book’s tragic story of two wealthy aristocrats (DiCaprio and Seyfried), their next door neighbor (Maguire), and their doomed love affair during the early 1920s continues to be poignant more than 80 years later after it’s first publication in 1925. It’s easy to see why Luhrmann would be interested in adapting the story for a modern generation that continues to be fascinated by fame and wealth..

Well, the project seems promising, but the 1974's adaptation of Scott Fitzgerald's novel didn't get so much praise and currently scores only 38% of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but... HEY! We are talking about Baz Lhurman! We are talking about the director of Moulin Rouge!, so it has a great chance of being a good movie.
In spite of don't like Leonardo Di Caprio, I must confess that he's a very capable actor and I really liked some of his latest works (Blood Diamond, The Departed and Inception), so I think he can be a good Gatsby.
As Di Caprio's character's love interest, Amanda Seyfried doesn't seems a good choice to me... I mean she's an OK actress, but her body of work is a little bit weak (the acclaimed teen comedy Mean Girls is the only who scores RT's percentage higher than 60% but she has the high-grossing Mamma Mia!) and she's not pretty in my opinion (she has a strange beauty that I don't like). Actually, I can see more talented actresses with a better body of work in her place, such as Rachel McAdams (Mean Girls; State of Play; Sherlock Holmes), Scarlett Johansson (Lost In Translation; Match Point; Vicky Cristina Barcelona) or Abbie Cornish (Somersault; Stop-Loss; Bright Star).
Tobey Maguire doesn't seem bad for the part and he's not a bad actor, but I'm a little tired of him, but I can't see other actor at the moment who could take the role instead of him (maybe Jake Gyllenhaal, but maybe he's too "women's-eye-candy" and young), so why not him?

This one seems promising!

TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today - 2017

The almost annual TOP 35 Actors and Actresses Under 35 Working Today is out, with me considering the performers' performances of 2016 also. We have a few changes since last year's list, with Greta Gerwig toping the list thanks to her last 3 great performances in Mistress America , Maggie's Plan and the Oscar buzzy acting turn in 20th Century Women . Scarlett Johansson comes second with her latest distinguished performance being in 2014 ( Under the Skin ), but she managed to be at the spotligh this year thanks to her fine turns in critically acclaimed movies: Hail, Caesar! , Captain America: Civil War , The Jungle Book (voice) and Sing (voice). Emily Blunt adds another great performance to her resume in The Girl on the Train and she comes third, while Elle Fanning 's turning into one of the finest actresses and she's getting to play more adult and complex parts like The Neon Demon  and 20th Century Women 's (her two best performances since Super 8 ). TOP 10 Most Promising Movie Actors (under 30)

Today I discussed about how awful some "teen icons" are and then we talked about some exceptions. So, I decided to make a little list, a TOP 10, with the male actors that I think that will become music in an ocean of noise somewhere in the future (I did one list before, but it was a little bit pathetic and I didn't justify my choices). Let's start... 1 - Ryan Gosling He may not have a huge list of movies in his body of work, but the few times he makes something, all the time he almost carries the movie. In fact, Gosling is a proof that talent does exist and that you don't need excentrical characters to receive raves. He rose to fame after the big screen adaptation of The Notebook (2004) and then received lots of critical praise for his performances in movies like Half Nelson (that gave him an Oscar, a SAG Award and other major awards nominations), Lars and the Real Girl (that gave him a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and other major awards nominations) and Fractur...

Academy Awards 2026 nominees predictions: Best Picture, acting categories, screenplays and Best Director (1st ROUND, updated)

BEST PICTURE BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE Leonardo DiCaprio  is a true movie star and the enthusiastic reception of Paul Thomas Anderson is earning him a ton of rave reviews while the movie seems to be a pretty solid contender in virtually every category at the Oscars.  Timothée Chalamet seems to have landed the a charismatic movie star role in MARTY SUPREME while  Danial Day-Lewis  is acting (and Oscar royalty) and he looks marvelous in ANEMONE trailer.  Jeremy Allen White is fresh from THE BEAR TV series glory and his performance as Bruce Springsteen has already earned him raves (and the AMPAS can't resist a musician's biopic). Last spot goes to Wagner Moura who carries THE SECRET AGENT/O AGENTE SECRETO like the movie star he proves to be - it's a great performance in a great film that will (almost for sure) represent Brazil for Best International Film and with a huge potential to pop in Best Original Screenplay, Director and maybe Picture if Neon decides t...
