Well, I don't know where to start... From Detroit's almost total loss of Oscar heat, to Kevin Spacey's replacement in All the Money in the World due to his sexual harassment scandal, to category placement between the Last Flag Flying's men (Bryan Cranston going supporting and Steve Carell going leading). And then, the unexpected success of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Sam Rockwell entering the Oscar talk thanks to his raved performance.
I present you my updated Best Supporting Actor predictions:
If you pay attention, all my predicted nominees star in a top Best Picture contender: Willem Dafoe stars in the indie darling The Florida Project (which is generating a lot of Oscar heat in top categories), Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg star in the drama Call Me By Your Name, Sam Rockwell is in one of the Oscar favorites that emmerged this Fall (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and Jason Mitchell is featured in Mudbound, Netflix's best Oscar hope this year.
But there are other Oscary performances seen this year. So, let's have a look at other respectable Oscar contenders of the Best Supporting Actor race:
- #6: Dustin Hoffman for The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) - A major Hollywood name in what seems to be a critical comeback and return to Oscar talk. It's been a while since Hoffman was part of an Oscar nominees shortlist, but think seemed bright for him thanks to his performance in Noah Baumbach's latest... but then another sexual harassment scandal! And you know Oscar race is almost a popularity contest.
- #7: Idris Elba for Molly's Game - His atrocious snub for his performance in Beasts of No Nation (2015) stills alive in people's minds. A Golden Globe and SAG winning actor, but Oscar snubed, Elba is well-respected in the Hollywood industry. Aaron Sorkin's Molly's Game is getting rave reviews and the AMPAS loves Sorkin-written characters (and Elba's part is juicy). If the Globes go for him, things might turn easier than most of us think.
- #8: Mark Rylance for Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan has never directed an actor to an Oscar nomination if you exclude Heath Ledger (Dark Knight), but Dunkirk's Oscar buzz is huge and Rylance is the best hope for an acting nomination. It's an ensemble piece, but he stands out. Will the AMPAS want to nominate a Dunkirk actor? He's an Oscar winner, so the Academy likes him for sure.
- #9: Bryan Cranston for Last Flag Flying - It's a charismatic/showy part and Cranston is an Oscar nominated already, but his recent words of support for Trump damaged his Oscar chances for sure. Politics aside, it's an energic acting turn!
- #10: Garrett Hedlund for Mudbound - The third acting gem of Mudbound. He has never been taken seriously until recent work (but his On the Road performance is riveting!), but Mudbound worked as a nice acting showcase for this underrated performer. With some "best of his career" reviews and one of the most magnetic characters in the movie, can he emerge as an Oscar nominee? Maybe if awards prefer him to Mitchell.
