Well, my first Best Foreign Picture predictions of the year... And there are a lot of interesting contenders! Just have a look:
Well, well, well...! So we have Sweden, Chile, France, Portugal and Cambodia... It seems very diverse! But let's remind that Portugal is the only "Western country" that never received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Picture (33 submissions, none of them got nominated), so I wish Portugal good luck with Saint George!
Now, the other contenders:
- #6: Foxtrot, Israel - The AMPAS loves Israel's submissions, but it is one of the countries with most nominations without a win (10 nominations). It is a war movie around a familiar drama and a young soldier's experiences during military service. A good one and AMPAS seems to love Israeli cinema.
- #7: On Body and Soul, Hungary - Lovely. Weird. Hungary's Oscar contender is not every moviegoer cup of tea, but it works somehow. The movie is considered an European Film Awards major player and it won the Golden Bear of Berlin Film Festival. AMPAS will pay attention to this one, for sure.
- #8: The Insult, Lebanon - One of those Toronto International Film Festival's hits. A courtroom drama about violence that Oscar voters might love easily. Plus, it seems the Academy is paying more attention to Middle East's cinematic productions and they have been kind to them, so Lebanon has a nice chance.
- #9: Loveless, Russia - The Best Foreign Picture Oscar nominated Leviathan comes from Andrey Zvyagintsev and so comes this year's Russian submission, Loveless. The story develops around a loveless separated couple who are brought together when their son goes missing... and critics fell in love with this movie! Independent Spirit Awards and National Board of Review both name Loveless as one of the years best foreign films. Will AMPAS follow the trend? Sometimes they just don't want to go for obvious choices in this category.
- #10: Happy End, Austria - The movie isn't brilliant, but it has Michael Haneke's brand. In fact, this movie isn't remarkable per si, but the acting performance manage to keep this one alive in our minds. Jean-Louis Trintignant, Isabelle Huppert and Fantine Harduin are incredible, so will the AMPAS go blind for its movie stars and nominate Haneke's latest? Well, I wouldn't underestimate this contender for sure!
